1. Set the real budget
Decide on a total price or monthly payment, then add tax, title and registration for your state (TN, MS and AR all differ). Get an insurance quote on the exact model before you buy; trucks and some SUVs cost noticeably more to insure.
2. Pick reliable, not just cheap
Look up the model year's common problems and recalls (nhtsa.gov/recalls is free). Low miles don't help much if maintenance was skipped, so ask for records.
3. Check for flood and title problems
The Mid-South sees flood-damaged vehicles after big storms. Read the title for "flood" or "salvage" branding, check the history report, and look for silt under carpets, musty smells and rust on seat bolts.
4. Test drive the way you drive
Take it on the interstate and stop-and-go streets. Run the AC on max (a Memphis summer will), listen for clunks, feel the brakes, and watch for warning lights. An independent pre-purchase inspection is always a fair ask.
5. Paperwork
Bring your license, proof of insurance, and your trade's title or payoff info. Read the Buyer's Guide sticker on the window to see what warranty, if any, applies.
Common questions
Can I find a reliable used truck under $20k near Memphis?
Yes, usually with higher miles or an older year. Be flexible on year and trim, and prioritize service history.
Do I pay Arkansas sales tax if I live in Tennessee?
Generally you pay tax and register in your home state. Ask Jacob and check with your county clerk for the exact amount.
